- Abstract:
- The ever increasing usage of modified binders in road construction requires that the effect of different modifiers on the performance characteristics of the asphalt binder be determined through laboratory testing. The current Superpave protocol for performance grading asphalt binders has proven to be insufficient to properly characterize modified binders, thus researchers have searched for other testing methods to complement or possibly replace some of the Superpave tests. Most notable are the time sweep test for fatigue resistance, the multiple stress creep and recovery test (MSCR) for rutting resistance and the direct tension test (DTT) for low temperature cracking characteristics. In the current study, the tests were carried out on binders modified with different amounts of styrene butadiene styrene (SBS), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), poly phosphoric acid (PPA) and crumb rubber modifier (CRM). The results were thoroughly compared and analyzed. Results showed that these modifiers improved the high, intermediate and low temperature performance of the binders, but the type and scope of the effect varied with the modifier used. A comparison of the results showed that the Superpave method cannot sufficiently reflect the performance and characteristics of the modified binders such that the performance grades of some modifiers with different natures and modification mechanisms were still the same. The MSCR test at high temperatures, the time sweep at intermediate temperatures and the DTT at low temperatures were much better able to differentiate between the effects and characteristics of different modifiers. Some problems were encountered carrying out these alternative tests, thus suggestions for possible improvements
