Preparation and Properties of PZT-PMN Ceramics using nano PZT Particles Obtained from Microemulsion Method

- Microemulsion is one of the major processing techniques to synthesize a nano, homogeneous, and almost agglomerate-free powders. Any kind of oxide ceramics such as piezoelectric ceramics can be synthesis via this method in nano scale without the formation of any intermediate phase. In this study, Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) powders with composition near the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) have been synthesized via a microemulsion processing route. This emulsion system is a thermodynamically stable mixture of oil (cyclohexane), nonionic surfactant (Triton X100), and an aqueous solution containing specific amount of Pb2+, Zr4+ and Ti4+. The ratio of these ions was adjusted with using ICP. Aqueous phase to surfactant phase ratio W0 determines the micelles size. In a specific ternary phasic composition of microemulsion, W0 to minor amount (W0=15.28) so the aqueous phase is dispersed as nanodroplets in oil phase. With increasing the W0 amount, the microemulsion system was become unstable. After coprecipitation of metallic ions in aqueous phase, the PZT precursors were obtained from the solution. Pure crystalline tetragonal PZT powders were obtained when the microemulsion-derived precursors were calcined at 800°C, without the formation of any intermediate phase, with a particle size in the range of 30-40 nm and rounded morphology. Modified Mixed Oxides method was used for obtaining Lead Magnesium Niobate (PMN). By utilizing this method, single phase PMN ceramics with a high relative density of 98% and good electrical properties was synthesized. (x)PMN–(1−x) PZT ceramics (where x is 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75) was achieved from a method and final samples go through a two step sintering. The phase composition and chemical structure, microstructure were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively couple plasma (ICP) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
