- Abstract:
- Nitroglycerine is an oily liquid and in pure form it is colorless. It is the main component of high explosives such as dynamites, and an essential ingredient of smokeless, double base propellants. The production of nitroglycerine has to solve the problems that arise from the extremely high mechanical sensitivity of the substance and the chemical instability of impure materials. Without sufficient control and mitigation of hazards, incidents have led to severe consequences, such as explosions, and threats to human lives, properties, and the environment. In this study, the hazard and operability study method is used to identify the existing hazards in the nitroglycerine production plant. Then, the semi-quantitative layer of protection analysis (LOPA) approach is used to estimate the risk of each dangerous identified scenario. Using LOPA can be evaluated with respect to predefined criteria, and the effectiveness of risk reduction measures can be assessed. Obtained results indicate that LOPA requires fewer resources and is faster than fault tree analysis or quantitative risk assessment. If more detailed analysis is needed, the LOPA scenarios and candidate IPLs provide an excellent starting point. LOPA also has some limitations. For example if the process be more complex the LOPA method cannot be a useful method
