- Abstract:
- Real modeling of ceramic foam filters, because of their specific tortuosities is not possible and in case of possibility of real modeling of pores in filters, because of restriction of element’s dimensions, the number of elements increases and model can’t be run in a reasonable time with common computers which are accessible nowadays. The common computer simulation of filters in Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) and their effect on fluid flow pattern is done by use of permeability properties of porous media. In this research, ceramic foam filters which are used in casting are simulated by Forchhimer and Darcy models. SUT CAST software is used for simulation, because of its ability for simulating foam filters of 10, 20 and 30ppi by Darcy model. In simulation by Forchhimer model, permeability’s invariables of porous media in Forchhimer relation (equation) are extracted by incompressible fluid (water) test in 25° c and the code relative to Forchhimer model imported to SUT CAST software and simulation were done. For validation of written code, base on calculation of pressure drop and velocity and pressure fields, tests are simulated by water as fluid and Darcy and Forchhimer modeling and real filter’s geometry are used. The comparison between simulation and practical results indicates that Forchhimer model compared with Darcy model and real geometry of filter has a better reliability and accuracy. On the other hand the run time of model in simulations base on filter’s permeability properties is very lower then simulations base on real filter’s geometry. To investigate the accuracy of mold filling time’s prediction in Forchhimer and Darcy models, Benchmarks are designed and casted. The result of simulation and practical casting indicates that Forchhimer model as compared with Darcy model, predicts the mold filling time with a better accuracy in all benchmarks
