- Abstract:
- Although there are several popular and standardized mix design methods for hot-mix asphalt, there is no universally accepted mix design method for cold in-place recycling (CIR). The varieties of recycling machinery, materials, quality control limitations, etc. have contributed to this problem. Most of CIR laboratory mix designs are based on 4-inch molds and maximum aggregate size of 1inch. The use of single unit train, which is the most common machinery used for CIR, results in poor control of aggregate gradation, especially when distresses such as fatigue cracking exist. This may lead to presence of aggregate sizes larger than 1 inch. In this case the use of 4-in mold is no longer appropriate and because of the change in gradation the field performance of the mix will be different from what was expected based on the mix design. In this research, different mix design procedures using 4 and 6-in molds and three aggregate gradations with different maximum sizes along with six different combinations of curing time and temperature were evaluated. To this end, a conditioning mold was designed to simulate the field curing. The results for three types of gradation showed differences of up to 1 percent in fluid content. Mechanical tests conducted on these specimens indicated that the variation in gradation and curing conditions results in different laboratory performance.
