  7. Abstract:
  8. Tuned Mass Dampers(TMD) are among the most studied passive or active control devices that have been used around the world to control the lateral vibration of different building structures. On the other hand, since 2-D structural models are not appropriate for estimating the true response of the eccentric structures, application of 3-D models have been considered for determining their seismic-induced coupled lateral-torsional behavior. In this research, the performance of the Active Tuned Mass Dampers (ATMD) in controlling the seismic response of 3-D structural models was investigated. Three structural models with 4, 8 and 15 number of stories and 3 different eccentricities (0, 10% and 15%) have been considered. The control system consisted of two ATMDs which are installed on top floor of each model operating in orthogonal directions. The optimal position of each ATMD was determined through conducting an extensive parametric study. The performance of the control system was investigated by means of time history linear dynamic analyses using a number of bidirectional earthquake input. The 3-D structural models with and without passive TMD and ATMD were analyzed separately to compare their efficiency. In case of active control, control forces are determined using classical optimal control theory with an analytical solution for Riccati equation. As the results indicate, the optimal positions of ATMDs depend on the buildings height and eccentricity. Although, the position for the ATMD installation is determined to be mostly the centre of mass at the top floor, but in high rise buildings with larger eccentricity, special attention should be paid for top floor elements. Finally, the Matlab software was used for performing the time history analyses
