  7. Abstract:
  8. In today’s competitive world, productivity is one of the main components that guarantee the success and profitability of an industry or a project. This research has studied productivity of dam construction projects in Iran that are usually classified as mega projects. First, the major factors influencing productivity of dam construction projects in Iran were identified and evaluated. Three main sources of information namely; literature review, records and lesson learned from previous projects and experts’ opinions were used to identify these factors. Then, 41 main factors influencing productivity were selected and the effect of each factor was measured based on the results obtained from questionnaires and the field studies. In order to rank the factors, Fuzzy Logic Method and Relative Importance Index method were utilized. By comparing the results, there found to be a high correlation between two methods. Research results using Fuzzy Logic Method showed: shortage of skillful and experienced labors, lack of utilizing proper equipment, inappropriate construction method, poor communication between office and field and delay in providing spare parts for equipment have the most significant influence on dam construction productivity in Iran. Second, the equipment and labor productivity were measured in a couple of earth dam construction projects in Iran. “Time Factor” and “Efficiency Factor” were used for measuring equipment productivity. To combine these factors and have a more realistic productivity factor, “Total Performance Factor” (TPF) was presented. For measuring labor productivity at project level, PLP index was modified to NPLP index and NPLP index was calculated for two earth dam construction projects as case studies. This quantative productivity analysis confirmed that the results obtained from the first section of this research are in accordance with the reality of dam construction in Iran. At the end, several suggestions to improve productivity of dam construction were proposed. These suggestions were based on experts’ opinions obtained from supplementary questionnaires and interviews.
