  7. Abstract:
  8. Available Transmission Capability (ATC) is a measure of remaining capability in the transmission system for future use which is calculated and posted by Independent System Operator (ISO) considering various certain and uncertain power system parameters. ATC can be affected considerably by application of flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) controller among them Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is the most recent one applied in power systems. This thesis is aimed to study the probabilistic ATC assessment incorporating UPFC. It first proposes a probabilistic ATC calculation method which is capable of considering various certain and uncertain parameters of ATC calculation in the operating horizon. The commercial aspects of transmission services in the deregulated power system are also incorporated in the proposed method. The approach used in the proposed ATC calculation method is also used for optimal ATC allocation in operating horizon. A novel UPFC reliability model is proposed to assess UPFC impact on ATC using the proposed ATC calculation method. An approach is then proposed for optimal UPFC application to enhance ATC in which the optimal control mode and settings of the UPFC are determined. At last, application of UPFC to enhance ATC is compared with application of other ATC enhancement alternatives to assess the economic feasibility of UPFC application and to evaluate cost/worth of UPFC impacts on ATC.
