  7. Abstract:
  8. The study of bolted moment end-plate connections, both beam to column and beam to beam connections, is quite general and standard nowadays. Buildings which utilize such connections are widely being used and the reorganization of their significant benefits is growing. The research work reported in this thesis presents the results of several parametric analyses to determine the moment–rotation curve of bolted moment end-plate connections utilizing Rectangular Hollow Sections (RHS) and two rows of bolts using Finite Element Modeling (FEM). Previous experimental studies have focused on the moment-rotation relationship under pure bending. This project particularly involves further numerical research into the effects of bending plus axial pressure load. At first a general and optimized 3D finite element model for these connections under pure bending is prepared. In order to confirm the modeling, the outcomes are compared to experimental results. Comparison between FEM curve results and experimental results of the connection shows the accuracy of the model. After calibrating the model, a large number of finite element analyses of model based on the mentioned loads and their combination are defined. Subsequently, in all cases, graphs of moment-rotation are presented to predict initial stiffness, ultimate moment and other characteristics of the connection. In addition, this research provides an insight into defining the initial stiffness of the moment-rotation curve. Proposed relation results, which are compared to reference results of several connections with various dimensions, conclude adequate accuracy
