  7. Abstract:
  8. Nowadays, the selection and updating the projects portfolio in project-based organizations is mentioned as one of the most challenging issues. Project based organizations used to try to shape their portfolios according to their strategic direction. Portfolio management is especially attended for project based organizations in IT industry in which there is a lot of project proposals with different objectives and scales. On one hand, the best approach for corporate strategy implementation in these kinds of organizations is based on project and portfolio management and on the other hand, the portfolio management in these organizations will affect the strategic direction. In the Persian literature, there are rarely dependable sources found for strategic alignment of project portfolio and if there exist, we could not find a practical model represented by it. In this thesis, we have tried to find a solution for this missing and fill the gap indentified. We have concentrated on defining new questions in practice and solving them rather than finding a solution for a existing practical question. For this reason, in this thesis we have walked on the line of practical and theoretical constraints for eliciting and solving the research questions. Following the strategic decision making framework for portfolio management in the literature, we have not forgotten the intuition and preferences of top managers for the sake of better opportunities. The essence of this thesis is for decision making support to top managers on the basis of the value created and identified by the scientific performance assessment. The project portfolio management and the value created by this model for organizations is represented on two dimensions. The first dimension is the how much the projects are in accordance to the corporate strategy, in other words, how much is the portfolio effective for reaching the strategic goals of the organization. The second dimension is the economic or financial value added by the portfolio which is the most important factor in portfolio selection decision making. For some reasons, the most important financial value in Kishware is Net Present Value (NPV). Finally, the two dimensions of project portfolio selection is implemented as a case study in the Kishware which is a project based IT company.
