- Abstract:
- According to prediction of ITRS, power consumption and bandwidth of processors' interconnection, will be the most major bottleneck of the System-on- Chips (SoCs) in the future. Therefore, in MultiProcessor System-on-Chip (MPSoC) architectures, the design constraints will be altered from "Computational Constraints" to "Communicational Constraints". There are three kinds of communications in the surface of the chip: Global, median and local. The main difference between global and local connections is that the length of latter one will be changed with technology. In other words, it is scalable like processor's elements while the length of global connections is practically constant. Even though global connections are less than local ones, but it doesn't have less importance. Increasing performance in some of global connections can significantly increase the performance of whole system. Transmission of data via optical signals is a physical way that is completely different from previous ones which can solve the most issues in electrical connections. The processing cores' connections and data routing in optical network need a new design structure and implementation in photonic and opto-silicon technologies. It originated from that different physical nature of data transmission in optical networks is in contrast with ordinary electrical networks. In this thesis we have proposed a design and recommended a novel NoC topology and the architecture of its optical router to conduct optical signals between cores in a MPSoC structure. On one hand our scheme is presented based on CCC's idea which eliminates some of the previous architecture's problems and on the other hand can exploit the benefits of optical transmission. We have discussed the architecture's issues such as wavelength routing method, the data transmission method and flow control issues in detial.
