Design, Fabrication and Clinical Test of a Hand Rehabilitation Device

Stroke is the main cause of disability in the world and the third cause of death, so spreading rehabilitation technique for post stoke patients is one of the most important targets un these days. The first prototype hand rehabilitation device was designed and fabricated in RCSTIM in 2008. Since the first prototype had been proved its effectiveness in clinical tests in the next phase industrial production of the device had to be considered at first all of the problems that had been observed during the clinical tests had to be solved for the future production. In the first series of experiments, clinical limitation and the interaction between the patient and the physiotherapist with the device was studied and the necessary corrections applied. Other effective parameters in industrialization such as the ability of two-way movements, chick appearance and suitable price were determined in the next step. Finally with considering the available standards in this field the device design was carried out. It should be mentioned that in designing of such device, the results of the same previous devices and dominated rules of GCP tests, treatment protocol and the number of sufferers were paid attention. Then the number of twenty patients who are in chronic phase should be examined in two groups of robot and control. The control group is treated during 20 sessions of one-hour, 6 sessions per week, by the traditional method of NDT. The robot group is treated by the device, in addition of traditional rehabilitation. In the first, 10th and the last session of treatment, the patients were evaluated by different criteria such as hand grip, movement amplitude, the grade of Fugel_Meyer, Ashworth tests and box and block tests. A comparison between two groups would be done so the effects of robot would be understood. Unfortunately due to lack of time and patients who satisfy the suitable circumstances, this project was only tested on 5 patients. The results demonstrate the robot effect in increasing of movement amplitude, power of grip, the grade of Fugel_Meyer, the ability of diurnal movements and reduction of spasticity in sufferers of brain stoke.
