  7. Abstract:
  8. The goal of this research is to introduce and improve the new multiscale finite volume method for simulation of multiphase flow in porous media. This method has recently presented as an efficient approach in computational fluids dynamics field. This thesis contains the followings: In the first step a brief introduction is presented about petroleum reservoir engineering and different methods of oil production. Then the importance of new simulation methods to anticipate the behavior of these reservoirs with detailed geographical information is discussed. In the second section black-oil formulation in petroleum reservoirs is descritized with the aid of finite volume method. Using general formulation, one can easily extract proper formulation for 2dimensional 2phase incompressible flow in porous media. In the third section, multiscale finite volume method is explained. Using primary fine grids coarse and dual grids are generated. Then basis and correction functions production is illustrated. Reconstruction of velocity field is demonstrated at the end approach of calculating the methods computational time and efficiency is described. In the forth section formulation of new modified multiscale finite volume method is presented. This method produces new boundary conditions for the basis functions that leads to more accurate results. In the fifth section, results of utilizing standard multiscale method for several test cases are shown and in some special test cases a comparison is made between standard and modified methods. Finally by analyzing the results, conclusion of the thesis is presented and some suggestions for new researches in this field are proposed
