- Abstract:
- Switched Reluctance Generator (SRG) has some unique features such as low cost, simple and rugged structure and high performance operation in wide range of speed. These features make the SRG one of the best candidates for optimum power generation. SRG has used as starter-alternator in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) and aircrafts. An SRG drive system operates by exciting the SRG phases with a DC voltage source and then discharging the stored and developed magnetic energy to the connected DC supply. Therefore, output power of a Switched Reluctance Generator directly depends on the excitation angles when operates in the Single Pulse Mode. In this dissertation the goal is to control a SRG in the maximum output power point. Here, first a high precision and quick magnetic characterizing technique is proposed and used to achieve the magnetic characteristics of the studied SRM. Then the variations of output power and other operational parameters of the SRG are studied via simulation. Maximum allowable rms value of the phase current is shown to be the most important limiting parameter in determining the maximum output power. Considering this limitation, a proper algorithm for calculating the excitation angles at maximum output power has extracted based on the simulation results. Afterwards, the effect of freewheeling in excitation pattern is comprehensively studied. This research showed that the freewheeling technique is incapable of increasing the output power more than the conventional single pulse excitation method and it just can reduce the ripple factor of the DC bus current if properly been used. Ultimately, the novel Symmetric Freewheeling Method (SFM) is proposed to optimally use the freewheeling technique for preserving the maximum output power while minimizing the ripple factor of the DC bus current. Experimental results are used in all steps to modify the ideas and verify the credibility of this research
