- Abstract:
- The Brushless Doubly-Fed Machine (BDFM) has the potential to be employed either as a motor in drive applications or as a generator in variable speed wind power applications. The Doubly-Fed Induction Machine (DFIM) is, currently, the main generator used for wind power applications while it suffers from the existence of slip-ring and brushes. The BDFM can potentially achieve the characteristics such as those of the DFIM while it benefits from the brushless operation. This dissertation aims to show the efficacies of the BDFM for variable speed power generation by developing and implementation of a suitable vector control structure. For this purpose, at first a vector model is developed for the machine which is validated against the experimental data. The developed vector model has a higher order in comparison to the existing vector models and, therefore, it has a higher accuracy. Secondly, a vector control structure is developed for the BDFM based on the machine characteristics in the synchronous mode. Among the main features which distinguish the developed vector control structure with the existing stator flux orientation control of the BDFM is its robustness to modeling errors or parameter changes in the calculation of the reference angle. The developed vector control structure is then analyzed based on the derived vector model showing the relationships established in the developed vector control structure between the control inputs and the machine torque and flux. In fact, in the developed vector control structure, linear relationships are established between the control inputs and the machine torque and flux. Based on such analysis, a shaft speed control system for the BDFM is designed and implemented in practice which confirms the efficacy of the presented approach for BDFM control. The BDFM with the developed vector control structure can compete with the DFIM in wind power applications
