On the Base Shear Force Distribution Along the Height of Base-Isolated Structures With LRB Isolators Subjected to Near Field Earthquakes

- In recent years there has been a huge amount of attention in the application of the base isolation system as a passive procedure to limit seismic response of structures. A number of international codes including UBC97, ASCE07-2005, and ASCE-2010 have devoted a special part for the Seismic analysis and design of base-isolated structures. The present work investigates the vertical distribution of the lateral seismic force, for base-isolated structures suggested by the ASCE07_05 code under near field earthquakes. Near field earthquakes have attracted so much interest among the researchers and engineers due to their disastrous effects on structures. According to the recorded data, it is comprehended that these kinds of earthquake records are always accompanied by a large energy pulse in the beginning of record. Thus it seems necessary to evaluate the effect of these types of earthquakes on the base isolated structures. In this study 12 base- isolation systems with different periods and damping ratios are designed for 4 and 6-story structures. A various non-linear time history analysis on 3-D base-isolated models with LRB isolators using near-fault accelerograms records on soft rock soil profile was performed. The ASCE07 analysis method to obtain minimum lateral force and its distribution along the height of the structure were utilized. The accuracy of the proposed formula by code in all cases was checked and some suggestions are made in the formula for near-fault earthquakes
