  7. Abstract:
  8. Increasing population and competition for producing various productions and also more consumption in recent decades, result in producing more wastes. Therefore effective and continuous waste management is essential for monitoring the process (from the wastes generation source to the waste disposal) and establishing the efficient strategies to reduce wastes. One of the major sources of waste generation is hospitals that cause lots of environmental problem unless they are managed properly.Recycling is an important element of waste management that can reduce costs by innovative and proper management. The purpose of this research is identification of recyclable plastic items and estimates the economic value of hospital plastic waste if they are recycled. To this end, two public hospitals and two private hospitals in Tehran were selected. Sampling days were a week day, a weekend and a holiday so we gather independent and random samples. Non hazardous sample waste collected in the white bags were weighted, after that the plastic items were separated, then the weight and type of them were determined and finally according to the current information exists in hospitals and recycling organizations of Tehran Municipality, costs and savings were estimated and the sensitivity analysis on costs was evaluated over the next five years. Eventually we found that the recycling programs at public and private hospitals are cost effective, and the more amount of waste they produce, implementing of source separating and recycling program is more essential, especially from environmental point of view.
