- Abstract:
- Hydrocyclones are used for separating different materials from liquids in a variety of applications. Compactness, efficiency, reliability and low maintenance costs are their noteworthy characteristics. Dewatering and deoiling hydrocyclones used for refining crude oil or oily waste water in offshore platforms are examples of liquid-liquid hydrocyclones. Separation process in hydrocyclones is based on the fact that swirl flow induces a centrifugal force and leads to separation due to density difference. The density difference in liquid-liquid mixtures is smaller than solid-liquid types and trying to separate one liquid from another takes much more effort than the other type. Increase of computational resources in recent years lead to 3D and more accurate numerical simulations. Due to anisotropic behavior of flow inside the hydrocyclones, LES is a suitable method to predict the flow field since it resolves large scales and models isotropic small scales. Flow field of hydrocyclone is obtained by three-dimensional simulations with OpenFOAM code. The obtained velocity field is in good agreement with available experimental velocity measurements. In order to evaluate the separation efficiency of deoiling hydrocyclones, a FORTRAN code is developed which the method of Lagrangian particle tracking with an optimized search algorithm is used. Also, the effect of cone angle on deoiling hydrocyclone flow behaviour and its separation efficiency is studied in this project
