  7. Abstract:
  8. Practitioners and researchers working on Software Development Methodologies (SDM) have always sought for ways to raise the degree of flexibility in SDMs, so that methodologies can be adjusted to specific project situations. Methodology Engineering (ME) approaches are being pursued to this aim, giving rise to Situational Method Engineering (SME). As the pivotal phase of software development, Requirements Engineering (RE) has proved essential in SME; however, SME has a long way to go as to its support for specialized RE practices. The RE practices employed in software engineering seem to provide a rich resource for strategies and techniques that can address this issue, if properly attuned to the SME context. This research aims to provide a set of SME-specific process patterns for RE, organized into a generic RE process model for SME. The abundant riches of the RE field (as practiced in software engineering) -which are the results of decades of research-have been explored for extracting these patterns; the patterns have then been adapted to the SME context. The resulting SME-specific RE process model and patterns provide a basis for extending and improving RE-related activities in existing SME approaches, and facilitate the instantiation and construction of bespoke RE processes for SME purposes. In order to demonstrate the validity of the process patterns proposed, they have been compared against RE-related activities already practiced in prominent SME approaches. The evaluation also reveals the shortages and gaps of RE support in existing SME approaches
