- Abstract:
- In the modern societies, wastewater treatment is essential in achieving high level of standard in environmental protection and disposal. Recently, many researches are performed to study the surfactants’ biological decomposition in wastewater treatment process. In this project, fixed bed aerobic reactors are used in order to remove surfactant from wastewater. Integrated fixed film activation sludge reactor (IFAS) is used to remove surfactants and organic matters. It also used to study the capability of micro organisms in organic load removal in fixed bed biofilm for biological treatment of industrial wastewater. Pumice stone were used as the support in the reactor. The pumice stone is a volcanic stone with high porosity and specific area which can be found in various regions of Iran. This support stone is much cheaper than commercial supports with similar properties. The experiments were performed in an up flow reactor with pumice stone support and with a total volume of 18 litters and effective volume of 9 litters. This reactor was fertilized using active sludge from Ekbatan wastewater treatment plant. The system setup took a batch period of about 5 weeks. In the next step, data were collected for levels of surfactants of 10, 20, 50 and 100 mg/lit, duration times of 12, 18, and 24 hours, and a total organic load of 750 mg/lit. The results showed that the efficiency of the system using pumice stones is satisfactory. These experiments were performed in order to measure the surfactants and organic loads removal level and also the amount of sludge sedimentation. The experiments resulted in 85% efficiency of surfactant removal for the stay time of 12 hours and surfactant level of 10mg/lit and about 95% for all the other conditions. It was also observed that the increment in surfactant level decreases the total efficiency but increases the amount of sludge sediment
