- Abstract:
- It is well known that sulfur removal from petroleum is necessary for both industrial and environmental reasons. Sulfur in petroleum products corrodes parts of internal combustion engines and refineries due to the formation of sulfur oxyacids and causes major air pollution and acid rain due to exhaust from diesel engines and emission of sulfur oxides. Hydrodesulfurization (HDS), biodesulfurization (BDS), extraction by ionic-liquids (ILs), selective adsorption, alkylation desulfurization and oxidative desulfurization (ODS) are some methods, can be effective in removal of sulfur compounds. Among these new processes, ODS appears to be particularly promising and is currently receiving increasing attention because it avoids the use of hydrogen and allows the process to be conducted at ambient conditions. ODS is defined in two consecutive steps: oxidation of sulfur compounds followed by removal of corresponding sulfones by extraction from the treated fuel and in this project the extraction step is studied. An experimental study was conducted to investigate the extraction of oxidized sulfur compounds from gas oil. Various types of solvents used for this purpose consist of acetone, acetonitrile, methanol and propanol. The effect of solvent concentration, solvent to gas oil ratio, extraction temperature, time and number of stages were studied. To select the best solvent and conditions for extraction, two criteria are considered in this study: high desulfurization and low hydrocarbon loss. Among selected solvents methanol for low ability of extraction of oxidized sulfur compounds and propanol for high loss of hydrocarbon after extraction were excluded from further experiments. After the tests, the optimum conditions for extraction were determined to be 85% acetone, solvent /feed ratio of 1, two stages extraction in ambient temperature and enough time for mixing. In this condition 73% of sulfur compounds of gas oil containing 1670 ppmw S was separated and 95% of gas oil was recovered
