- Abstract:
- Full numerical methods are usually used for the analysis of periodic structures such as photonic crystals and diffraction gratings. The main drawback of these methods is that they are time-consuming and thus are not appropriate for the design process. In this thesis, approximate and fast methods, based on transmission line models, for the analysis of periodic structures are proposed. To this end, in the first part of the thesis, we investigate one-dimensionally periodic metallic gratings. Longitudinally homogenous metallic gratings, enhanced reflection phenomenon and longitudinally inhomogenous metallic gratings are examined, and simple, and efficient transmission line models for these cases are proposed. Meanwhile, limitations of the proposed models are clearly stated. In the second part, two-dimensionally periodic structures, i.e. two dimensional photonic crystals are studied. At first step a transmission line model for one layer of a photonic crystal is presented and then a simple and accurate transmission line model is proposed for extraction of the modes of photonic crystal based waveguides. In this part, we also study and propose transmission line models for photonic crystal circuits made of different types of series configurations and stub-like structures. Finally limitations of the models are closely examined
