  7. Abstract:
  8. Gamma-ray spectroscopy is the quantitative study of the energy spectra of gamma-ray sources. A gamma-ray spectrometer also determines the energies of the gamma-rays photons emitted by the source. A radioactive nucleus (radionuclide) commonly emits gamma rays in the energy range from a few keV to ~10 MeV, corresponding to the typical energy levels in nuclei with reasonably long lifetimes. Most radioactive sources produce gamma rays of various energies and intensities. When these emissions are collected and analyzed with a gamma-ray spectroscopy system, a gamma-ray energy spectrum can be produced. A detailed analysis of this spectrum is typically used to determine the identity and quantity of gamma emitters present in the source. The gamma spectrum is characteristic of the gamma-emitting nuclides contained in the source. The code presented here is written in Visual C++ and is a combined research and general purpose gamma spectroscopy analysis and calibration program capable of operating on spectral data from high resolution detectors. It is designed to run under all versions of Microsoft® Windows™. The peak search algorithm is based on finding minima in the smoothed second difference of the spectral data. The peak fitting is performed using a linear least squares routine, fitting the data to a Gaussian function with an exponential tail on either the low energy, or both sides of a peak. The nuclide identification and other calculation are done by forming an interference matrix and solving interfering sets using a weighted least squares method. Some major features, which are selectable as options are as follows: •Good graphics •A comprehensive library of radionuclides (gamma rays and other data) • Subtraction of environmental background There are report files produced from each stage of the analysis, including a full and a brief activity report. This report is produced using a template text file which can be easily modified by the user.
