- Abstract:
- Interceptor is a blade installed on planing hull transom, and it helps the planing performance by making an stagnation point on aft part of the hull thus generating a lift force and reducing the planing trim. In the present study a numerical modeling of a planing hull in still water has been made and the effect of an interceptor in the numerical model has been studied. Then by validating the model with and without the interceptor through experimental model testing, it has been used for modeling a planing hull in waves with an interceptor. The numerical modeling has been made using 2DOF analysis in Ansys-CFX and the experimental model tests have been done in Mechanical department of Sharif University of technology. In the first part of the thesis the analysis has been made in still water. Drag and trim versus speed diagrams were derived, then with adding the interceptor to the geometry of the modeled planing hull, comparison between the two cases were made. The result showed that both the drag and the trim of the planing hull were reduced in presence of interceptor. Then the results were compared with experimental data. In the second part, a linear wave was made using the difference in input velocities and change of free surface height at inlet boundary. Then the numerical wave was encountered with the planing hull and the hull responses were recorded. Then the interceptor were added and the results were compared, in the end experimental model tests in various heights of interceptors and different wave lengths were done using laboratory wave maker and towing tank. The Experimental and numerical results have been compared. Finally in this study a new numerical modeling method have been introduced that can be used in 2-DOF analysis of high speed planing hulls with different appendages
