  8. Noise or noise pollution, is defined as an unwanted sound, produced mostly by motor vehicles in urban areas. If the noise exceeds its limit, adverse effects on users and citizens are expected. Thus the assessment of the noise level and its comparison with allowable values is mandatory. Traffic induced noise depends upon different factors such as traffic, weather, and, sound barriers. Noise pollution study has a long history all over the world. Many studies, mostly representing the outdoor noise pollution models, have been done in recent years. This paper presents an assessment of traffic-induced noise in a heavily traveled tunnel, locally referred to as Resalat tunnel, which is located in the metropolitan area of Tehran. The impacts of traffic volume, vehicle speed, ventilation noise, and other elements on the sound level inside the tunnel were analyzed. Measurements were conducted at 9 stations inside and 2 stations outside of the tunnel. The traffic data were obtained by videotaping the site for more than 12 hours. Regression methods were used for data analysis. Measurement results showed that noise levels inside the tunnel were much more than ambient levels due to its confined space and the presence of jet fans. It has also been noticed that the relationship between noise levels and traffic volume passing through the tunnel shows a completely different pattern in peak hours compared to the non-peak hours.
