  7. Abstract:
  8. Power systems aredynamic and complex systems that are always subject to continuous changes and disturbance. Power system stability is a requirement for its satisfactory utilization. High speed Automatic voltage controllers with high gain tend to deteriorate both the electromechanical oscillation damping and small signal stability margin. Power system stabilizer (PSS) is a complementary controller that uses exciter voltage reference modulation to improve the electromechanical oscillation damping and stability margin. Optimal operation of PSS requires appropriate tuning according to the grid and power plant characteristics. In a largepower grid, absence or improper tuning of PSSs may cause one or more local or interarea modes to have insufficient damping. The aim of this thesis is coordinated tuning of power system stabilizer in the interconnected power grid of Iran, in order to provide sufficient damping of local and especially interarea modes. In this thesis, first the Iranian power grid in peak load of summer 1390 (2011) has been simulated using modal analysis in DigSILENT environment. Poor electromechanical modes have been extracted. Using these results, then PSS are tuned coordinately in a sequential fashion. Due to the practical application of this thesis, first the PSSs are tuned using phase compensation-eigenvalue locus, which is the most common method in power industry. Later, the gain of PSSs are determined using optimization methods in complete model of the system. Simulation studies showed that the existing stabilizers are not sufficient to damp all interarea modes adequately. Therefore, appropriate power plants for installing additional PSSs are determined. PSSs with both local and remote input signals are studied separately. To observe the operation of PSS with new optimized setting, time domain simulation and modal are carried out. Performance of the purposed design algorithms are also examined on the New England Test System, containing 10 generators and 39 buses.
