- Abstract:
- With improvement of design and analysis techniques, use of irregular bridges has been expanded. These improve the aesthetics of urban spaces as well as providing shorter highways in impassables. Horizontally curved bridges are among the type of structures, which needs to be designed based on three-dimensional analysis. In this thesis, three-dimensional nonlinear analysis was performed by Endurance Time Method (ET) on horizontally curved bridges. Nonlinear models have been analyzed under ET acceleration functions. Comparing ET results in DBE level with earthquake responses, the difference between these two methods were determined. ET estimated earthquake responses with good accuracy; considering its high calculation speed its use was justified. Using the results in DBE level, trend of responses with increase of curvature is determined. Results showed the amount of responses in longitudinal directions decreased while they increased in transverse direction. Based on ET method, a fast method for determining performance curves was proposed. The performance curve of prototypes showed that with the decrease of curvature radius the performance of bridges will be degraded.
