  7. Abstract:
  8. Biodiesel can be a good alternative for fossil diesel since it isrenewable, biodegradable and non-toxic. Also, in comparison with fossil fuels, it emits less air pollutants and greenhouse gases.Findacost effective and environmentally friendly wayforcontinuousproductionofbiodieselcanaddressmany of our environmental concerns. In this study, we applied heterogeneous alkali-catalyzed transesterification as method and used waste frying oil as a low cost feedstock for biodiesel production. The project was performed in two phases. First, experiments were conducted in astirred reactor to finda suitable catalyst which was strontium carbonate calcinated for 3:24 hours in 975̊C.
RPB(rotating packed-bed reactor) which has an adjustable rotational speedand provides high centrifugal force, was employed as a novel heterogeneously catalyzed transesterification reactor. The methanol-to-oil molar ratio, the rotational speed of the packed-bed rotator, and the input temperature were investigated for their effects on the conversion of fatty acid methyl estersin the RPB reactor. The effect of adding biodiesel from the beginning of reaction was also studied. Catalytic activity of catalyst was investigated in 4 sequencing run and no significant loss was observed. Based on the results, the RPB reactor is considered as a practical, heterogeneously catalyzed transesterification reactor due to its excellent micro mixing characteristics. We also designed an efficient process by using a number of RPB reactors in series, to achieve continuous production of high quality biodiesel
