  7. Abstract:
  8. Considering the significant role of process plans in computer-aided manufacturing, a lot of researches have been conducted to fulfill the gap between the different aspects of process planning systems. However, there is still a wide gap for process planning systems to completely fulfill the requirements. In this research an expert system for turning operation is proposed. The system is capable of suggesting appropriate machining parameters with the aid of an inference engine. The proposed system has an integrated data structure based on ISO 10303 (STEP) standard for both geometric design data and machining parameters. In this system, geometric design data is stored in a database with a data structure based on STEP AP203, represented in Part 21 of the STEP standard. Furthermore, a data library including machining tools and machining parameters data is designed within the system. The data structure of this data library is integrated based on ISO 10303 (STEP) standard. In the proposed system, with the aid of the data library, the inference engine is capable to suggest appropriate machining parameters f (feedrate), v (spindle speed), and ap (depth of cut) for different machining tools and machining conditions given to the system as input
