  7. Abstract:
  8. Detention basins have been used as one of the Best Management Practices (BMPs) for urban flood control during the last decades. In this study, rainfall-runoff modeling in Darakeh Catchment of Tehran for return periods of 50 and 100 years has been performed using Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). This modeling aims to evaluate the present drainage network in dealing with floods and to identify critical sections. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used as analytical framework for siting detention basins considering hydrologic, hydraulics, physiographic and economic factors. First, weights for Criteria have been specified and then, site selection of detention basins has been performed. Considering suitability maps, different plans that included one or more detention basins has been defined. Study area has been simulated for each scenario to obtain outlet flow hydrograph in each. These alternatives, in addition with the scenario of developing present network’s capacity were compared with current condition based on outlet hydrograph and implementation costs and the best plan has been determined. The results of this research show that: 1) Combination of runoff-rainfall modeling and multi-criteria decision making is a suitable way for optimal use of detention basins; 2) Employing detention basins solves flooding problems in urban areas and also decrease peak flow and consequently the flood risk in these areas; 3) For immunization of the case study against flood, using mentioned structures is superior to increasing channels capacity scenario in higher return periods. Results of this research help managers and urban planners to use detention basins and other related BMPs more effectively for flood control
