  8. In addition to investigating the overall situation of healthcare information systems (HIS) in Iranian hospitals, in this thesis the goal is to determine the key elements of success and failure in the implementation of HIS. With the advent of the computer systems in Iran and due to the successful and unsuccessful experiences of organizations, the necessity of detecting the influential elements in this field is perceived even more than before. Another importance of this research is because of the essential role of the cultural and social factors in the success of these systems; this claim can be justified by observing different results founded by researchers from different countries. In this work we strive to detect the influential elements that are categorized into four groups including technical, organizational, environmental, and social. In order to attain this goal, we gathered the information of the experts and leaders who are active in this field by the qualitative research method of interviewing. While interviewing, the technical deficiency was mentioned by experts as the most important problem of the healthcare information systems in Iran. Currently, in the spite of the recent attempts of several health centers, none of the hospitals could implement a healthcare information system thoroughly. Combining the health knowledge with information technology, the flexibility of the HIS to be implemented in all hospitals, reformist leadership, performing implementation step in the units of an organization, the effective education of employees, detecting informal groups, and legislating in national level to force the hospitals to adopt HIS are necessary factors mentioned by experts and leaders of HIS in Iran to implement a successful healthcare information system. In recent year, several hospitals attempted to make healthcare processes electronic and even tried to implement healthcare information systems with considerable amount of funding, none of these attempts, however, were successful. Due to the lack of a center responsible for gathering these experiences and knowledge transferring mechanism, this study seems essential for gathering information and avoiding repeating similar failures by other organizations
