- Abstract:
- Mobile Ad hoc networks or MANETs consist of autonomous selfish nodes, which usually have a limited source of energy and choose their own transmission power independently. Nodes are mobile; hence the network topology changes continuously in time, therefore a topology control protocol is required to preserve the network connectivity and to adjust the transmission range of the nodes. Also in the absence of any infrastructure in the network, since the energy source of each node is limited and nodes are not eager to consume it for others, in order to stimulate the selfish nodes to cooperate to provide network services (such as relaying data packets) , we need to exert an incentive mechanism in the system. Game theory is a branch of applied mathematics which studies the ways in which strategic interactions among rational players produce a social outcome. Mechanism design is a sub branch of game theory which tries to plan certain rules for a game in order to obtain desirable outcomes. Therefore it can be applied to the topology control problem in MANETs. In this thesis, we model the topology control problem as a game, and we apply mechanism design to motivate the nodes by payments to cooperate with others, to achieve a balance between network metrics, including total transmission power and energy consumption by nodes, hop distance between each pair of network nodes. We propose variations of some topology control algorithms, using VCG mechanism to provide this goal.
