Assessment of Fault Effect on Tunnel Stability Under Seismic Load by UDEC Software (Case Study: Shibli Tunnel)

- Dynamic design of underground structures is complicated and difficult. Although underground structures are less vulnerable than surface structures, dynamic analysis of these structures during their design process is necessary. In this project, numerical studying of fault effect on underground structures and its dynamic responses, focusing on tunnel Shebli was conducted. Two-dimensional model utilizing UDEC software which is based on descrete elements method was used for this analysis. Time history of Manjil Earthquake using horizontal component of ground acceleration which is propagated toward earth surface was applied to models as a shear wave with respect to depth and type of rock. To confirm the accuracy of numerical model results, first it was compared to theoretical results and then it was used for parametric studying. Parametric analysis included assessment of tunnel overburden effect, fault locations relative to the underground structure, fault mechanical properties and in-situ stress ratios. Results of analysis indicates that earthquake effects on tunnels can be examined and it was decreased by increase of depth. Also, there was not any noticable openings in joints and faults because of prersence of supports. Tunnel stability was increased and displacement of tunnel crown was decreased by increase of fault distance from tunnel section. Parametric studying indicated that displacement of tunnel crown was decreased under earthquake load by increase of horizontal stress ratio, and it was increased by increase of fault shear strength. Consideration of structural effect on tunnel stability showed that in tunnel modeling when there was joint structural medium, if one assumes continuous medium with medium strong to weak rock mass, displacement of tunnel crown in joint medium would be more than its amount in continuous medium under earthquake load.
