- Abstract:
- Usually the structures are designed based on the fixed-base assumption; however this assumption is not always correct and the bed flexibility should be considered. This effect which is called soil-structure interaction, change the response of structure on both elastic and inelastic behavior. In the regulations for the design of structures on flexible base, generallysoil-structure system is replaced with an equivalent fixed base structure; in the way that the design force of soil-structure system with reasonable accuracy can be estimated by equivalent fixed-base structure. In some regulations, dynamic characteristics of equivalent structure have been determined on elastic state and the results have been extended for inelastic case of soil-structure system. In other words, in this method the nonlinear behavior of structure is not considered in equivalent method. This technique was first reported in ATC3-06 criteria and thenwas used in various regulations such as ASCE7-05. In the next edition of the Code, ASCE7-10, was trying to reform the equivalent structure’s damping for estimating the design force of the soil-structure system more accurately. By regard that, there is no comprehensive study on replacing the soil-structure system with fixed-based structure, in this research, based on equivalent method, equivalent damping is determined in the way that has high accuracy in estimating design force of soil-structure system with equivalent period, which is specified in ASCE7-10. Moreover the reliability and sensitivity of the derived results to estimate the design force of the soil-structure system are considered. According to this study, generally the use of equivalent damping provided in ASCE7-10, is non-economic in elastic state and is unsafe in inelastic state. Generally using ASCE7-10 criteria for replacing the soil-structure system with fixed-based structure have low accuracy in estimating design force.
