  7. Abstract:
  8. The increased need for experimental verification of the seismic performance of conventional and novel structural systems has resulted in highly sophisticated dynamic test procedures. Hybrid simulation is one of the most efficient experimental methods for assessment of dynamic and rate-dependent behavior of large-scale structural systems under earthquake excitation. Compared to earthquake simulations using shake tables, hybrid simulation may have significant advantages in terms of cost, scale, geometry, and required physical mass of structures. However, recent hybrid simulations have been limited to simplified structural models with only a few degrees of freedom. Currently, the major challenges for using hybrid simulation in large and complex structural systems are the lack of robust simulation algorithms, and the sensitivity of the results to experimental errors in the presence of high-frequency modes. Therefore, improved numerical integration procedures are essential for the extension of hybrid numerical and experimental simulation to large and complex structural systems. One of the integration procedures proposed for this purpose with improved stability and accuracy is the numerical integration method with combined implicit or explicit steps. This algorithm uses recent experimental measurements to capture the instantaneous behavior of experimental substructures in an implicit iterative scheme and avoids physical iterations. To ensure the continuity of simulation, the method uses the explicit formulation in steps that fail to converge. Since the stability and accuracy properties of implicit and explicit methods cannot be combined, a series of parametric studies have been carried out to investigate the accuracy and stability properties of the integration algorithm with combined implicit or explicit steps. For assessment of the reliability of simulation results, energy-based error has used to examine the effects of experimental and numerical errors
