- Abstract:
- In recent years, the use of fibers has found considerable attention in concrete structures as in spillways, basins of dams, shell structure, industrial floors, and bridge pedestrians. Fibers modify the brittle nature of concrete and make the composite behave ductile under various types of loading. Fibers have numerous advantages such as higher impact resistance, less shrinkage, smaller crack width, higher durability and low expense for repair and maintenance.
Till now, no adequate data has been reported on concrete beams reinforced with high volume fiber. In this study, flexural behavior of concrete beams reinforced with high volume steel fibers is experimentally investigated. Concrete with high fiber volume can provide potential for usage in structural elements subjected to the high impact and enhanced flexural ductile resistance.
Twenty beams with dimensions of 10 (width)×15(depth)×120(length) centimeter, were tested under flexural three point loading. The steel fiber reinforced concrete beams, have five different fibers volumetric percentage (0%, 1.5%, 3%, 4% and 5%). The strength of the plain concrete was 30 and 45 MPa.
The specimens were tested under deflection control. The monotonic concentrated load was applied at the center of the beam and the relative deflection was measured and demec points were used to determine curvature of the beam. Load-deflection and moment-curvature diagrams have been obtained and plotted for each beam individually.
Test results indicate that higher fiber content considerably improves flexural behavior and provides higher energy absorption and ductility. It also demonstrates that ultimate load carrying capacity of the beam with high volume fiber, could reach three times of the plain concrete specimen and the energy absorption improve up to 40 times.
Based on the observation during concrete mixing and casting, for fiber content above 3 percent, mixing and producing homogenous reinforced concrete even with proper and high volume of superplasticizer becomes extremely difficult - Keywords:
