- Nowadays, due to expansion of the cities, growth in population and developments in technology, energy demand has increased extremely. Therefore responding this increased demand is a great challenge in political and economical management of all countries. Thus in recent years, cogeneration has become so popular between experts in the energy field because of its great efficiency and performance. The goal of this research is to design a controller based on a model which can predict the behavior of the cogeneration system. This controler is called “Mode Based Predictive Controller”. It utilizes the system in such a manner which has the lowest operation costs. This goal is obtained via modeling of the system and solving a linear mixed integer mathematical programming problem which is based on the model. The objective function of the problem is total operation cost which has to be minimized. Then the results of this smart strategy will be compared to those of the traditional methods of controlling cogeneration systems like the so-called “Heat-Led” operation strategy. One of the key innovations made in this research is introducing carbon tax tariff to the problem and in its objective function. By manipulating this tariff in polluted days, utilizing the cogeneration system will not be profitable anymore and the smart controller will not use the cogeneration system in order to reduce operation costs. But the main objecive is to avoid polluting the air in polluted conditions of metropolises. So by increasing carbon tax tariff, cogeneration system will be deactivated in pollution crisis
