- Abstract:
- Air enterance in to flowing water is something that is commonly seen in the water conveyance systems. The mixture of Air and water that flow together create a kind of flow that is called two phase flow. This kind of flow is often seen in culverts and water conveyance systems. There are different flow patterns in two phase flow. Considering pressure fluctuation, pressure drop and pressure recovery, slug flow pattern is the most complicated pattern among all.
Sometimes a singularity is used in a tunnel; one of the singularities that are frequently used in water conveyance system is expansion transition. In this study an experimental setup is used to model two phase slug flow, which passes through a tunnel with an expansion transition in it. The aim is to enter different combination of air and water discharge in to the tunnel in order to determine flow characteristics such as; pressure fluctuation, drop and recovery in different parts of tunnel by the means of pressure transducers. These experiments are repeated for expansion with different divergence angle, and also for a channel without any singularity. In the end, Results indicate that air and water discharge ratio and divergence angle have an impact on pressure fluctuation, the place where its maximum happens and the amount of pressure recovery in transition section. In the way that, an increase in the discharge ratio will increase the amount of overall pressure fluctuation, the more the divergence angle increase, the more the location of maximum pressure fluctuation become close to transition section, and the more the pressure will recover in transition section. Eventually a comparison between experimental result and homogeneous model result for pressure recovery in sudden transition show that; this model underestimates the amount of pressure recovery in sudden expansion - Keywords:
