Survey the Change of Phreatic Line Position in the First Filling of Earth Dams until Steady State Seepage

Since seepage-related problems account for the cause of more than forty percent of dam failure seepage analysis serves as one of the most significant stage in the design process of an embankment dam. Currently a steady seepage analysis in a typical or maximum cross section of the dam is formed instead of transient seepage analysis for simplicity. In this way, for the change of condition (unsaturated to saturated) in the first filling of dams and it’s effects on behavior and reaction of dams until the steady seepage condition established; the results of steady seepage analysis cannot be satisfactory. In this thesis, based on finite element method and with assumption of saturated-unsaturated flow and considering steady state of water in normal level, the change of seepage amount and phreatic line position in the first filling of homogeneous and non-homogeneous dams until established steady state condition, is studied in the several parametric cross sections of dam for the case study. With this estimate, can assessing about the amount of seepage discharge from the body of dam and it’s consolidation settlements. A dimensional analysis is done to give in hand the graphs needed for estimating the position of the phreatic line of the dam by considering the effect of time and also to determine the time needed to gain a steady state. Finally, the accuracy of the results is examined with the results of a seepage analysis conducted on the data from Sattarkhan dam that is an embankment dam under exploitation. Considering these graphs, the position of phreatic line in different time ratios for homogeneous and non-homogeneous embankment dams can be calculated. Knowing the time span between the two phreatic lines renders the computation of the time needed for reaching a steady state seepage possible
