  7. Abstract:
  8. The use of wind energy and wind generators as an inexpensive type of renewable energy sources is increasing. Wind farms and distributed wind generators connected to the power transmission and distribution systems and microgrids, and wind generators in standalone mode of operation affect the stability and power quality of the grid. In this thesis, the performance of a matrix converter in grid connection of variable speed PMSG–driven wind turbine is improved. In this way, by transferring the matrix converter modulation matrix into the synchronous reference frame and decomposing it into the singular values, a new general method is proposed for analysis, modelling and modulation of a matrix converter. The proposed modulation technique is general and can be used to derive all other modulation methods of a matrix converter. It is shown that the real constraint of a direct matrix converter, which is computed with the proposed method, is less than that of all other modulation methods proposed for this converter. The proposed method is used to investigate and improve the grid–side reactive power capability of a matrix converter as a key element in stable connection of a variable speed wind generator with low voltage flicker and high power quality. The effect of the matrix converter input–output reactive power on the input current and output voltage quality is also investigated. The proposed modulation method which uses full capacity of a matrix converter, improves the grid–side reactive power capability of a variable speed PMS wind generator. However, if the wind speed and the generator apparent power is reduced, the maximum–achievable reactive power of the grid–side is also reduced severely. Therefore, a new control structure is proposed which uses both the matrix converter and the generator free reactive power capacity synchronously to improve the grid–side reactive power capability at all wind speeds and powers. Finally, the shortcoming of the conventional voltage–source control of a matrix converter in control of a standalone PMS wind generator is investigated. A new control method based on current–source control of a matrix converter is proposed which can control a variable speed PMS wind generator in both grid–connected and standalone mode of operation and supply local loads when the main grid is not accessible due to the low quality of its voltage or a fault
