- Abstract:
- Supercritical airfoils are designed for transonic flow to reduce the strength of shock and its drag. These type of airfoils are used in design and construction of commercial airplanes because of their low drag in transonic regime and, as a result, a reduction in fuel consumption. Using supercritical airfoils needs accurate investigation of flow field due to several influential factors such as their specific geometry, nonlinear nature of flow phenomena, and compressibility effects. However, the availability of experimental and numerical data for supercritical airfoils is less than that for conventional airfoils. Thus, conducting experimental tests is essential for understanding of flow field around supercritical airfoils. In this thesis unsteady characteristics of a supercritical airfoil with pitch oscillati motion in transonic regime has been investigated. For this purpose, a wing model has been constructed and its two-dimensional surface pressure has been obtained in a transonic wind tunnel to study the effects of different parameters such as oscillation amplitude, Mach number, mean angle of attack, and reduced frequency. It is the first time that this research which provide abundant information about unsteady flow around a supercritical airfoil in transonic regime has been conducted in Iran. Results of this thesis can be used for determination of suitable conditions of using an airfoil to prevent undesired phenomena such as severe pressure fluctuation and dynamic stall. Furthermore, the provided data can be employed for validation of numerical analyses
