  7. Abstract:
  8. Identity and language are two interrelated concepts which can affect and control individuals' performance in learning another language. A person with L1 identity is able to make and comprehend pragmatic performance based on background information about the L1 context. The ability to comprehend without difficulty or conscious awareness of details of the context is due to the bilateral roles of identity and culture (Kasper, 2010). To shed light on pragmatic identity and language identity, this study was conducted on relationship between second language, pragmatic identity and their interactions on pragmatic competence of Iranian EFL learners. As many as 120 participants took part in this study. They were given both language and pragmatic questionnaires along with a discourse completion test (DCT). Two native English raters were asked to rate the DCTs based on Jernigan's (2007) rating scale. The correlation result indicated that there is no significant relationship between second pragmatic identities vs. pragmatic competence of EFL learners. However, attitudinal and motivational L2 self which was one of components in language identity questionnaire had significant relationship with pragmatic competence in EFL learners. The present study has implications for teachers to help learners get familiar with second language culture and shape their second language identity and pragmatic identity. The study has also implications for materials development and syllabus design. Considering cultures and contrast between the norms in both languages, syllabus designers of EFL textbooks need to include materials to promote consciousness rising among EFL learners
