- Abstract:
- The sudden increase in population growth rate in major cities and the recent changes in life style (consumerism) have resulted in a massive load of municipal solid waste. Managing this huge amount of waste imposes a heavy burden on municipalities’ shoulders. There are several options to Manage Solid waste, among them incineration and landfill are widely use in Managing municipal solid waste. Considering the fact that these two options are potentially hazardous to environment, high moisture content of municipal solid waste added, composting has become more trendy approach in last decades.Although composting is more environmentally friendly, it still needs the waste to be collected from all parts of the city and transported to processing site. These operations require notable human and financial resources also the transporting vehicles release greenhouse gases.Decentralized Municipal Solid Waste offers the possibility of processing the solid waste in the houses or in communities instead of gathering and processing all the waste that a city makes in a processing site outside the city. In this research the effect of inoculation and additives on composting and compost quality in a household composter was studied and results showed that inoculation of Pseudomonas and Pincilium can improve the composting process and Super Phosphate Triple fertilizer can accelerate composting. In another part of the study the effect of different percentage of mature compost in the feed stock on compost quality in a small community based composter was examined and the results revealed that the optimum percentage of mature compost in the feed supply should be about 20 percent
