  7. Abstract:
  8. The shear lag phenomenon is one of the effective factors in determining the tensile capacity of tension members. In this phenomenon, there are various factors including the size and type of the cross-section, the type of connection, the length of connection, thickness of gusset plate, etc. are effective. The previous studies which are the basis of the specification equations, have been conducted on the cross-sections with bolted and riveted connections, while no study has been conducted to determine the effects of some of these factors yet. Using numerical methods, the present study investigates and compares each of the effective parameters on shear lag phenomenon on the single and double angle and HSS sections with welded connection. The studied parameters include: the size and type of cross-section, the type of connection, the length of connection, the size of welds, the thickness of gusset plate, the free length of member and the free length of connection. Connecting the angles to the gusset plate is done by both legs. The results of the numerical analysis show that in the single angle, the parameters of connection length, the connection eccentricity and the thickness of gusset plate have been the effective factors, while in the double angle and HSS, only two parameters of the connection length and the connection eccentricity are effective and other parameters like the size of welds, the free length of gusset plate and free length of member have no significant effect on the phenomenon of shear lag. Comparing the results with the AISC-LRFD predictions, it was identified that the specification relations, because of ignoring some of the effective factors like the thickness of gusset plate in the single angle connection and effect of symmetry in the double angle connection, are conservative in most cases and in order to correct the specification relations, the alternative relations is presented for each cross-section
