- Abstract:
- Nowadays, over seventy percent of buildings in the world are Structures which show a weak and often vulnerable behavior. Therefore, cognition and perception of the behavior of these types of structures are of important matters.Brick walls are the most important components of brick structures which have two in-plane and out-of-plane failure mode that are the common failure modes. Up to this point, lots of studies taking into account in-plane and out-of-plane behavior of brick walls individually have yet been carried out. However, the way these two modes could affect each other has not been studied effectively and there is no precise vision about this issue in the engineering society. Consequently, it seems that a closer scrutiny upon in-plane and out-of-plane interaction of brick walls is a necessity. It has been attempted in this research to reach an adequate vision about upon in-plane and out-of-plane interaction of brick walls by Micro Modeling approach considering several parameters such as compressive strength of brick, strength of mortar, surcharge and different aspect ratios) and by variants in-plane and out-of-plane loading conditions including simultaneous loading, in-plane prior loading and out-plane prior loading. To achieve this goal, more than 4500 analyses were performed using "ABAQUS" finite element software. These analyses considered three types of loading after exertion of surcharge: in the first group, the in-plane loads were applied prior to the out-of-plane loading. In the second group, the out-of-plane loads were applied prior to the in-plane loading and in the last group, the loads were applied simultaneously. By observation of the results, it can be inferred that the upon in-plane and out-of-plane interaction will reduce the out-of-plane force capacity more severely compared to the in-plane force capacity. Additionally, the upon in-plane and out-of-plane interaction reduces the in-plane displacement capacity to a great extent. Another important point to indicate is that the applied overload ratio to the wall has the most influence on the in-plane and out-of-plane interaction of brick walls. The other influential parameters are the aspect ratio of the wall, the compressive strength of brick and the mortar strength.. It should be noted that in the case of exertion of in-plane loading first, the out-plane capacity, will be dramatically reduced. Therefore, it can be said that this kind of loading reduces stiffness and strength of brick walls to a great extent. It should be regarded that if either one of the loadings has the priority, the in-plane and out-of-plane interaction will have larger influence on the behavior of the wall, compared to the simultaneous loading. At the end, several simplified formulas have been provided for in-plane and out-of-plane interaction in different situations
