- Abstract:
- It is necessary to monitor pollutants in aquatic samples, because many of these compounds can pose threats to human health and the ecosystem. Separation technology based on magnetic materials has received considerable attention in recent years. The magnetic extraction method is not only convenient, economical and highly efficient, but it also overcomes problems with conventional solid-phase extraction. In order to remove anionic dyes from single and ternary systems, zinc ferrite nanoparticle was synthesized using co-precipitation method and its surface was modified by Cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) cationic surfactant. Surface characteristics of ZFN-CTAB was studied using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Total organic carbon (TOC). In a batch system, the effect of absorbent dosage, surfactant concentration, contact time, initial dye concentration, pH and salt on dye removal was investigated. The results showed that the efficiency of dye removal from colored solution by ZFN is low and increases by surface modification using surfactant. The adsorption isotherms of Langmuir, extended Langmuir, Freundlich and Tempkin were fitted with experimental data. Adsorption isotherms followed by Langmuir model for single systems. The maximum dye adsorption capacity (Q0) was 26.110 mg/g DR23, 55.556 mg/g DR31 and 64.103 mg/g DG6 for ZFN-CTAB. Adsorption kinetic of dyes was found to conform to pseudo-second order kinetics. The results showed that the ZFN-CTAB being a magnetic adsorbent might be a suitable alternative to remove dyes from colored aqueous solutions
