Evaluation and Application of Thermo Photovoltaic (TPV) in Energy Recycling, A Case study: Application in an Energy Intensive Unit of Mobarakeh Steel Complex

- Thermo photovoltaic (TPV) is temperature oriented power generation system in which an emitter with temperature value around 1200℃ is usually used for radiation to the cells.Iron and steel industry as a fundamental industry has the most potential of interest for using TPV for recovering of energy. In steel casting unit there is rather high amount of radiation with temperature around 1000℃ which can be recovered by TPV system. The main aim of this dissertation is developing a mathematical model as well as verification of the model experimentally, in which the model is extended for possible using in iron and steel industry.The key modeling parameters of TPV include: open circuit voltage, short circuit current density and fill factor of cell. These parameters are considered as functions of several variables including: temperature of emitter (slab), temperature of cell, distance between the cells and the emitter, spectrum response and cell’s energy gap. External Quantum Efficiency (EQE) as an important parameter of cell’s spectrum response is also considered in the modeling through a function of photon wavelength entrance to the cells. In similar manner, variation of temperature of the emitter is considered through a function of slab cooling rate in vicinity of the air.A typical TPV set in small and laboratory scale is designed and manufactured for validating the result of the model.It is found that for recovering of emitted energy in the form of temperature radiation from slab with GaSb cell, a minimum value of temperature of 873℃ is required. The upper limit of temperature value of the emitter is determined in the production process of the steel associated to the hot rolling unit with temperature value of 1250℃.In the Mobarkeh steel complex the temperature value of slab coming from casting machine is around 900℃ and the effective area of the slab is about 64m^2. In this condition the amount of energy recoverable by TPV, is determined about 3.3129 TJ that is always loosed annualy. Finally, it is calculated that in the case of operational condition of casting unit, an amount of 26.987 MJ from energy loosed is can recovered
