  7. Abstract:
  8. Detecting emotions and facial expressions, as a means of nonverbal communication between human and machines, has attracted a great deal of attention in recent decades with the developments in artificial intelligence and acknowledging the ties between robotics and future human life. Human face plays a key role in his communications and processing it in a video source for the sake of mood recognition could be employed in different applications such as improving human and machine communication and analysis of emotions in different circumstances. Facial expression detection is useful in understanding not only momentary emotions, but also mental activities, social interactions and psychological signals. In this work, a framework is designed and implemented where a video of a subject is taken with a mobile camera under laboratory conditions. The frontal facial view is then recognized and the next frames are analyzed to determine if the subject is frightened, nasty, sad, perplexed or angry. This study majorly focuses on defining proper benchmarks in images which would enable one to figure out the subject’s mood (facial expression) in the first few frames. The proposed framework is implemented on a standard database, namely Extended Cohn-Kanade database. The nearest neighbor classifier technique is applied for the final classification
