- Abstract:
- According to Sheldon (1988) textbooks are visible hearts of any English language teaching program. Relevant textbooks are prerequisites of an appropriate teaching and learning situation (Hutchinson & Torres, 1994). Evaluation is helpful for making subsequent informed decisions through providing information on the usefulness and effectiveness of textbooks (Allwright, 1981). The Right Path to English and English Book are two Iranian textbook series that have been prescribed by the Ministry of Education for teaching in public Junior and Senior high schools, respectively. Employing Litz's (2005) questionnaires, attitudes of Iranian learners and teachers were obtained on both the series. Considering the Junior high school students there were 166 males and 261 females at the second grade. Regarding the third graders there were 199 males and 263 females. As for the Senior high school students there were 148 males and 248 females in the first grade. Considering the second graders there were 173 males and 191 females. Furthermore, there were 137 males and 231 females in the third grade group. Considering the Junior high school teachers there were 35 males and 41 females. As for the Senior high school teachers there were 35 males and 39 females. The obtained data on questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive statistics, namely mean and standardized skewness value, of the participants' ratings on each of the items on both the questionnaires. It was revealed that regarding both the series, there were positive attitudes toward price and accessibility of the textbooks; however, the resources, vocabulary lists, language type of the series, and treatment of cultural issues were viewed to be inappropriate and in need of improvement
