- Abstract:
- Derivation and lexicalization are two critical subjects in morphology and word-formation processes. Although wide studies have been taken place about derivation, which is one of the most productive processes of word-formation along with composition, there has been no proper attention to lexicalization, which sometimes happens after derivation. One of the applications of this thesis is developing dictionaries. With regard to this issue that there is no scientific and complete method for recording lexical units in Persian dictionaries, we decided to propose a scientific method to do the mentioned activity by studying derivational processes, affixes and lexicalization phenomena and its relation to recording the lexical units. To achieve this goal, after looking up the F-lexicon Database and the Reverse Dictionary for derivational affixes and the lexemes which are built by them, we found ten conditions for lexemes that lead them to become lexicalized after derivational processes. These conditions are: low frequency, opacity, unpredictable meaning, bolding a feature of the base, base obsolesce, non-productive word-formation pattern, stylistic type, regional type, having unusable base and phonetic change. We concluded that all the new lexemes, which are built through derivational processes, are not necessarily lexicalized. So there were some affixes which do not cause the lexemes to become lexicalized after affixation. After listing the lexemes, which become lexicalized after affixation through the above-mentioned ten conditions, we dealt with the shortcomings of Persian dictionaries, especially Sokhan Dictionary, from lexicalization perspective. Through this investigation we found out that lexical entries have been recorded without regarding lexicalization phenomena, in this dictionary; so we introduced some of these cases
